Trust levels in dealers vs. private sellers show varied results, but comprehensive car information and quality photos are crucial in building trust. There’s a generational divide in buying and selling preferences, with Gen Z responders significantly less likely to visit a dealership compared to the average, underscoring the need for a diverse approach in marketing and customer engagement.
Economic factors like rising fuel prices and inflation are significantly influencing consumer choices. Many responders, particularly younger millennials, say they are adjusting their car budgets, which reflects the broader economic impact on consumer decisions and market trends.

Engagement with Online Content
The latest survey results indicate a heightened engagement with online automotive content, especially news and reviews. While platforms like YouTube are popular for car content with the overwhelming majority of consumers from multiple demographics utilising the platform for both comparisons and reviews. This suggests the importance of diverse and engaging content strategies to capture and retain the interest of a broad audience.

Survey Methodology
The carsales research team conducted the consumer sentiments survey to measure consumer sentiments towards buying and selling on a consistent basis. The survey was made available on the carsales website, with the results being weighted towards the carsales audience. The survey appeared as a pop-up on the website and mobile versions of carsales and was completed by 2,141 Australian respondents with results weighted to the population as per the 2021 Australian Census. Fieldwork dates for the survey was December 12th – 22nd, 2023.
