Electric charging makes the price board of Queensland service station
In what’s being described as an Australian first, a Pacific Fuels service station in Drayton, Queensland has caused quite the stir on social media platform Facebook after an eagle-eyed motorist spotted the addition of the cost per kilowatt of electricity to its petrol-dominated price board.
Posted to the Electric Vehicles of Australian Facebook page, the price board and the cheap price of electric charging relative to that of petrol, has attracted the curiosity of electric vehicle advocates and curious social media users alike, with over 100 shares and 200 comments.
While EVs make up less than 1% of new car sales in Australia, EV sales in May 2021 increased by more than 300% year-on-year to 436 registrations, excluding the sales of EV-leader Tesla which does not report in VFACTS.
Indeed, local EV sales are underreported, with the Californian brand importing more battery Electric Vehicles (EVs) into Australia in 2020 than all other brands combined.
According to the carsales New Car Showroom, 14 EVs are available for purchase in Australia, with those priced under $68,740 eligible for the Victorian Government’s $3000 EV subsidy – with more set to land on Australian shores by the end of the year.
Interest in Electric Vehicles is increasing on carsales. Between November 2020 and January 2021, views of brand new EVs listed for sale on carsales increased by 32% over the previous comparable period, resulting in an uptick in enquiries of 25%.
A host of automakers, including Fiat, Ford of Europe, and Jaguar, have announced their intentions to move to EV-only production by 2030, while the Australian distributor for Chinese EV brand BYD says it will deliver three sub-$35,000 vehicles to market over the next nine months, in what is being described as a breakthrough moment for the electric vehicle movement in this country.
