At a glance

Mahindra has unveiled its new Lifestyler ute in Mumbai, confirming Australia as a priority export market ahead of a likely early 2027 launch. The ladder-frame dual-cab replaces the ageing Pik-Up and has been benchmarked against the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

Key takeaways

  • Six to nine months of Australian validation testing about to begin
  • Mahindra confirms the Ranger and HiLux as its direct benchmark
  • carsales estimates a local launch price near $40,000
  • Mahindra ruling out a race to the bottom on price against Chinese rivals
  • Mahindra chasing a five-star ANCAP rating, having missed with the related Scorpio 4WD

The Finer Details

Mahindra’s towing and payload targets sit close to segment benchmarks. It’s chasing 3.5 tonnes of braked towing, a one-tonne payload and a 6300kg gross combination mass, figures that would put the Lifestyler line-ball with the HiLux on paper. Power is expected to come from a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel producing around 130kW and 450Nm, paired with manual or automatic gearboxes across 4×2 and 4×4 variants.

None of that is locked in yet. Mahindra’s head of international operations, Sachin Arolkar, confirmed to carsales that the Ranger and HiLux were the benchmark from day one, with six to nine months of validation testing about to begin on Australian roads to shape suspension and powertrain calibration. Arolkar also said Mahindra won’t chase the market on price by matching low Chinese pricing, positioning the ute above the value end of the segment instead.

That leaves a gap worth watching. GWM’s Cannon still owns the budget-conscious buyer, while the latest Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara have both crept upmarket in their newest generations. carsales estimates the Lifestyler could land from around $40,000, sitting below Ranger and HiLux pricing but above the segment’s cheaper entrants.

Safety is another open question. Mahindra is targeting a five-star ANCAP rating for the Lifestyler, a notable shift after the related Scorpio 4WD scored zero stars. Three variants were shown in Mumbai: Valley for work and leisure, Reef for coastal use and Trail for off-road adventure, each with its own look and equipment story, though local specification is yet to be confirmed.

The Road Ahead

Competition for the light commercial segment keeps building regardless of how the Lifestyler lands locally. BYD’s Mako is due internationally from 2027, Toyota is tipped to revive the Stout nameplate, and Ram’s Dakota isn’t expected until 2027 either. That timing could see Mahindra reach market ahead of several rivals, though the outcome depends on how its validation program translates to Australian conditions.

Final specification, pricing and local availability are still to be confirmed. carsales will keep tracking the Lifestyler’s progress toward Australian showrooms.
